[It's not an answer, true, but she knows Tommy well enough to understand what that means. He's not just hanging out for the sake of keeping her company. He actually cares.

It makes her smile a little. She opens the door wider and stands aside to let him in.]

C'mon in. There are dishes in the kitchen.

[dickmoves]

[ In he goes, polite as can be. He's got a bit of everything and after they get their fill they can probably go do something fun, right? Right. ]

[It's Tommy. She doesn't exactly expect him to be polite. Instead she gestures to the couch.]

Make yourself at home.

[She'll go get the dishes. And the wine.]

[dickmoves]

[ Dropping down on the couch and taking that bag off to put all the bags of food on the table. ]

[She remembers last minute to grab a couple of beers out of the fridge for Tommy. It's a part of her attempt to put up a brave face through losing Simon. Act like nothing's wrong. She's survived worse.

Kate forces a smile on her face when she walks back out, balancing a couple of bowls with wine glasses and bottles. She places them on the coffee table.]

Help yourself.

[dickmoves]

[ He takes the beer and kicks back. ]

How've you been holding up? [ Not pushing it, just asking. It's the best thing he can do. ]

[tryit]

[She takes a seat next to him, uncorks the stopper in the wine bottle and pours herself a glass. Before responding, Kate takes a long drink.

It was only a matter of time before Tommy brought this up. But god, did it have to hurt so much?]

Well, Sam's not kicking me out of the house. So Lucky and I don't have to worry about being homeless any time soon...

[dickmoves]

[ He matches with a swig of beer. Speedster metabolism means it takes so god damn much to get drunk it's not even really all that fun. ]</small. That's good. Sam seems like a good guy.

[tryit]

[Thank god for good old normal human metabolism. Because a part of Kate thinks that getting drunk right now would be a really, really good idea. A stupid idea, but still a good one.]

He is. He's just... [She shrugs. Tommy can probably guess where she's going with her thoughts. He's just not Simon.]

[dickmoves]

... Yeah. I get it.

[ He does. He really does. ]

[tryit]

[She doesn't exactly mean to look at him skeptically, but she does anyway. It's not like they talk about this sort of thing all that much.]

You better not be just saying that, Tommy.

[dickmoves]

[ Tommy shrugs. There's a pit before them - he says one word and he's breaking the cardinal rule, talking about before the Young Avengers.

Instead he looks off at a fixed point on the wall. ]

Why do you think I don't bother getting attached to anyone here? People leave enough back home, and it sucks.

[tryit]

[She follows his stare before tucking one knee against her chest. Right. It's a lesson you'd think she'd learn by now. Death's just as much a loss as anything else. And hasn't she had her fair share of dealing with those?

Still... There's something about Tommy's words that leave her more annoyed than anything else. Loss is a part of life. They both know that.]

You're missing out, you know.

[dickmoves]

I'm working on it.

[ He shrugs again, finishing his drink and grabbing another one. ] I have been since I met you guys.

[tryit]

I'm not going to regret it. [She says the words as much for herself as she does for him. Kate drains the rest of her wine before pouring herself a new glass.] I knew the possibility was there that one of us might leave. But while Simon was here? It was so worth it.

[It's just going to hurt for a while. For a long while possibly.]

[dickmoves]

And that's what makes you our leader. You get things like that. [ Which is probably added responsibility she doesn't need. He stares at his bottle for a minute, turning it over in his hands before speaking. ] I'm glad you had him. Really. Things like that are important.

[ A pause, he actually thinks over his next words. ] Listen, you know it and I know it - I'm not good at this whole feelings thing. That's Billy's thing, and even then he's pretty sheltered so he misses stuff. People leaving was pretty normal for me, so I get it... So if you need a distraction or... or if you want to talk about him? I'm all ears.

[ And that's the closest anyone is ever getting to any of the mess he calls a past. ]

[It really isn't. Because not all of her decisions as leader have turned out beneficial to everyone involved. Damn it, a lot of her decisions in her personal life haven't exactly turned out beneficial, either. So even though she knows Tommy's trying to comfort with those words, she winces anyway.

Ouch.

But then Tommy does something completely unexpected. She turns to look at him, quirking an eyebrow in surprise. He doesn't talk about his past much. Kate leans closer to wrap her arms around him in a hug. He might not do feelings and stuff, but sometimes she does. Like right now. She rests her forehead on his shoulder and closes her eyes.]
